JUnit vs. TestNG: Comparing Java Testing Frameworks
Hey there, friends! A few weeks ago, we discussed Selenium: Test Automation Framework. To better organize your test scripts and make them more reusable, I mentioned that you need to use a test automation framework, such as TestNG and JUnit. So, today, I will look at these two most popular Java-based test automation frameworks.
What is JUnit?
JUnit is a unit testing framework for Java, enabling developers to write and run repeatable tests. It's an instance of the xUnit architecture for unit testing frameworks. Unit tests are typically automated tests written and run by software developers to ensure that a section of an application (known as the "unit") meets its design and behaves as intended.
Historical Background:
JUnit was initially written by Erich Gamma and Kent Beck. Over the years, it has gone through several iterations:
- JUnit 3: This is the older version, and while it laid the foundation, its usage has dwindled in favour of newer versions.
- JUnit 4: Introduced in 2006, it brought annotations to the framework, allowing for more flexible and readable test configurations.
- JUnit 5: Launched in 2017, this version is not just a new iteration but a complete modular redesign of…
